Captain Blood. By Raphael Sabatini. As a pre-teen, I spent a lot of time in my room. I don’t remember how “Captain Blood” wound up in my room, on my bookshelf, but it was there. One day, when I was around 13, I read it. It was amazing! It was great adventure.
Captain Blood begins the adventure as a doctor in England. While following his moral code to assist those in mortal danger, he is arrested as an enemy of the crown. His punishment is to be enslaved on a plantation in the new world.
As events unfold we learn of his resourcefulness and willingness to do whatever is necessary to win. My favorite scene is when Blood and the pirates go head-to-head with a superior ship. As Blood pulls along side the enemy in his damaged and sinking ship, he yells to his crew saying that their ride is the new ship. All hands abandoned the doomed pirate ship and conquer their foe!
I don’t know how realistic it is, but over the years this book has served as my standard for the swashbuckler. If you haven’t read it, I really recommend it!
