Datsun 240Z Monday Machine #Photo

When I was 15, my half-brother told me he had a 260Z while stationed in Germany with the USAF. His stories of cruising the Autobahn and carving twisty back roads made me want a 260Z of my own. I never bought one. When I was stationed in Germany for 3 years with the USAF, I picked up a used BMW 525 and had plenty of fun with it. But I always loved the lines and proportions of the early Z cars. They were some of the best-looking sports cars of all time in my opinion.

The Fairlady Z was sold in Japan. When exported to the USA it was sold as the Datsun 240Z. The model I spotted in Oceanside, might be a late ’71 – ’75. The round badge on the C pillar replaced the 240Z badge of the ’69-early ’71 cars. If it is, the original engine was a 2.4 liter straight six producing 151 hp and a 4-speed manual transmission. A 3-speed automatic transmission was also available but was rare.

This car has Recaro style seats and a variety of weight-reduction changes. It may have an updated engine too!
