Helos of Mars

Mars has hosted princesses and cavalry officers. It has been the province of spider rock bands. It’s also know for it’s potatoes. But today the helicopters of Mars fly the angry skies.

Sitting alone in my suite, I watch the sky fade from indigo darkness to a pale, pale blue. Coffee tastes better with a sunrise. The mist of a nearby Valley settles lower as a dozen flamboyant airships rise into the morning. Golden sunlight bathes their spherical bodies and highlights their riotous colors as they clear the low hills around them. I turn my attention to my handheld device. The latest issue of NASA’s Mars Exploration newsletter awaits my review. Today’s highlighted story is the 47th launch of the Mars helicopter. I am amazed as I watch the tiny drone disturb the Martian soil with its downdraft and rise above the low hills like the earthly aeronauts in their balloons nearby.

Mars is 54 million kilometers away at its closest.
